ABOUT DRUMPARK SCHOOL

Drumpark School was a school for children with special educational needs in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The school is now only called Drumpark Primary School.

Drumpark School opened on 5 May 1926. The school has had many achievements in football, for which the secondary department became the second best team in Scotland in May 2012 the football team won the league 2 years in a row as Drumpark in 2011 and 2012 then as Buchanan High School, North Lanarkshire in 2013 and 2014. The students have climbed Tinto Hill and done a lot of other sports activities over the years. The school originally was a school for medical issues in the early years of the school's history but some of the senior pupils became more mainstream than some of the younger students in the lower years in the secondary department.

Pupils from Drumpark School, North Lanarkshire, joined an ‘Eco Fun Day’ recently (18th June) as a celebration of having enjoyed permanent Eco Schools’ status for a year. The event, sponsored by leading recycling and resource management company Viridor, saw fun environment themed workshops delivered by Ultimate Arts.

Staff from Viridor’s nearby materials recycling facility (MRF) – Scotland’s most advanced mixed plastic, paper and cans recycling centre, joined local the Rt. Hon. Tom Clarke CBE, MP to encourage pupils to keep working on their recycling projects, just as they did when the pupils visited the site earlier in the year.

Pets at Home joined the day, giving pupils the opportunity to handle small animals, in addition to distributing ‘goodie bags’. The school also received equipment for wildlife projects.

Playing on the bouncy castle, equaliser, and mobile soccer pitch and taking part in multi sports gave opportunity for exercise and fun. Quieter sessions of storytelling took place in the library.

Commenting, Viridor’s Communications Manager, Martin Grey, said:

“Viridor was delighted to again link up with the pupils, teachers and parents of Drumpark to celebrate their achievement. Viridor has a great story to tell regarding recycling. But that wouldn’t be possible without the support of the next generation of young people.
“Yet again the school showed its pioneering commitment to sustainability, building on its winning entry for our Scotland wide Christmas card competition. We had a great day and look forward to working with the school again in the new term.”
